Why Are You Getting Shoulder Tightness?

At some point in our lives we've all suffered with shoulder tightness and neck pain, you might even be suffering with it right now, but can you put your finger on why this is? Is it that you have a really stressful, time consuming, deadline exhausting job? Is it that you have a really taxing family life or are struggling with the relationships you have going on in your life right now? Is it that you are working at home slouched over the kitchen table or working on the sofa? It could be a number of things but right now, just take a minute out to really notice where your shoulders are? I know, I know, they are on the tops of your arms by your neck but really look at where they are. Are they right up by your ears because you are stressed, anxious and tired? Or are they quite far down your back away from your ears? Now I hope its the latter but I guarantee they aren't.

So what can we do about that I hear you ask? Well there are a few things I want you to do right now. One of them is truly amazing. Turn around, close your eyes, take the biggest inhale possible with your shoulders drawn right up to your ears and then forcefully exhaling. Do this 3 times and each time you should feel a stretch across the front of the shoulders and across the collarbone. By doing this, it allows the tension to fully flow out of the body and away, allowing you to feel calmer and more relaxed immediately because of the serotonin (calming hormone) levels going up and the cortisol levels (stress hormone) dropping.

I would love to hear from you, get in touch by leaving a comment below, or better still tag me (@yogigemma) in a photo of you doing it and post on social media.
