Mental Health Awareness Week 10th-16th May 2021


Its Mental Health Awareness Week this week, and its all about getting out into Nature. Now if you have been following me for a while, you know that I constantly talk about getting out into nature and really allowing your mind and body to connect with it.


No matter what you are going through right now, know that nature will always help you in some way. You just need to be open to it and start to listen to what is around you. Take in the sights, the sounds, the smells, the air. Notice all the little tiny noises from being in the environment around you. From the smallest of birds to the biggest of animals. Or try to concentrate on a specific noise, maybe that of a bird or a water flowing. Notice how its making you feel.


Now I want you to imagine all of that negative energy flowing out out your body and into the environment. Let all the trees soak up that energy exactly like they do with carbon dioxide. Imagine that they are taking your energy away and truing it into calm, better energy like they do with oxygen.


Did you know that 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (like anxiety and depression) in any given week in England. That's a huge number.


It doesn't matter where you live, even if you live in a high rise block of flats in the middle of a city, you can still go outside on your balcony, close your eyes and imagine. Whatever nature you have around you, know that it will help you in some way. Know that it will use your energies and turn them into something good for you to feel so much better.


Notice all the little things around you. If you are close to the beach or ocean, take a walk along the sand or pebbles. Sit and watch the water move, gliding in and out, listening to the water wash up on the beach and lapping. Take a walk and paddle in the sea. Notice how you feel with the water around your toes, feet, ankles. Are you feeling calmer, lighter and more uplifted?



Crying is another amazing thing to do out in nature to. Its your body's way of telling you, you need to sort this out and its literally crying out for you to help it. Keeping things bottled up is not a good way to be. If something is bothering you, then talk about it, journal your thought's and feelings and let it all go. Cry, scream or do what is necessary for you to feel good. Crying is such an amazing release and it makes you feel so much better afterwards. Don't worry we all cry at some point. I sometimes do around my moon cycle, where all the tension, hormones and body has all built up over the last couple of days and it just gets to much. Just cry out in nature. Go hug a tree or touch or stroke a tree. Now this doesn't mean that you are a 'Tree hugger' and there isn't anything wrong with that at all, I'm one of those, but just use your senses. Feel, touch, smell it. Let the tree help you to feel better.


Now if you are struggling at the moment, know that you are not alone. So many people are in the same position and its heart breaking to see. But if we are all there for each other, the we can help each other. Ask a friend, family member etc 'How are you feeling today'? The most common answer will be 'I'm good' so in that case actually ask again, well are you actually ok? As a nation we seem quite reserved but just let it all come out. Trust me you will feel so much better once you do talk or go out into nature.
