Summer is a wonderful time when everyone is happy. There are people enjoying the green spaces in the outdoors and everyone just has a happy feel about them. But have you ever found when it just gets too hot during the summer months, you just don’t know what to do with yourself? Even if you drink lots of water or cool down in the sea, you still can’t get comfortable. Well try these three cooling breath exercises. They calm your breathing and heart rate and allow your body to cool down quicker.
Pranayama is the breath movement in yoga. It helps to centre and realign your breath and helps to calm the mind and body. Try these three cooling breath techniques.
1. The Cooling Breath This breath calms the nervous system and lowers blood pressure.
Come to a comfortable seated position and soften through your face. Roll your tongue into a straw like shape and inhale through your mouth. Exhale through the nose. This will draw the cool air in and let the warm air out. Repeat for 10 breaths, closing your eyes if you wish and letting go of all your negative energy.
2. Square Breathing This cools and calms the body.
Come to a comfortable seated or laying down position. Centre yourself and let go of all your negative energy. Close your eyes and soften through the face. Slowly inhale for 4 counts, hold your breath for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts and hold your breath for 4 counts. Repeat this 3 times. Release your breath, allowing your breath to come back to its normal rhythm.
3. Alternate Nostril Breathing This breath allows you to fully concentrate on your body and letting go.
Come to a comfortable seated position. Exhale completely and bring your right thumb onto your right nostril. Inhale through your left nostril really filling your lungs. Pause at the top and bring your right little finger on your left nostril. Exhale through your right nostril then inhale though the same. Switch your fingers and exhale through your left nostril. Continue like this until you feel calm, centred and cool.
Do these breathing exercises whenever you need to. Come back to them at any time of day and when you are feeling hot. Enjoy your summer.
